The focus of the design was to create a vital and beautiful living environment from redundant institutional and convent buildings at the rear of St Joseph’s Hospital at Auburn. The concept called for a series of linked courtyards creating both formal and informal landscapes. A network of internal pedestrian “roads” connected residential areas with generous communal facilities in the renovated convent building and smaller localized communal areas.
A dementia unit was located off-site in a residential street adjoining the hospital and was designed to closely resemble a suburban home. At every phase of the project care was taken to personalize individual spaces and provide a variety of experiences.
